Greener Steel is on its way

Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment. From shifting weather patterns that threaten food production, to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale.

Fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas – are by far the largest contributor to global climate change, accounting for over 75 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions. As greenhouse gas emissions blanket the Earth, they trap the sun’s heat.

Changing our main energy sources to clean and renewable energy is the best way to stop using fossil fuels. These include technologies like solar, wind, wave, tidal and geothermal power.

As manufacturers of metal products, we are interested to do our bit for climate change. As well as looking to reduce our own energy consumption and moving to cleaner energy sources, our suppliers are doing the same.

Arcelor is one of our steel suppliers. Operating from 16 countries on 4 continents, they produce approx. 60 million tons pa. Traditional methods of manufacture use vast amounts of fossil fuel energy and mined raw materials.

With a Net zero target set for 2050, they are investing in cleaner more efficient production technology throughout Europe which will transform the impact materials have on the planet in the coming years. Steel metals will be produced using Electric Ark Furnaces (EAF) using 100% renewable electricity and a minimum of 75% recycled content. With a 66% reduction in CO2e, this is good news for the planet and something to tell your customers.
